ครั้งหนึ่ง มีเด็กเลี้ยงแกะซึ่งอายุยังน้อยผู้หนึ่ง ทำการดูแล (ฝูง) แกะของเขาอยู่ที่เชิงเขาใกล้กับป่าทึบ เขารู้สึกค่อนข้างจะเหงาใจอยู่ตลอดวัน ดังนั้นเขาจึงคิดแผนการณ์ขึ้นอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งแผนการณ์นี้จะช่วยให้เขามีเพื่อนแก้เหงา และมีความสนุกได้บ้าง เขารีบวิ่งไปยังหมู่บ้าน พร้อมกับร้องขึ้นว่า (ช่วยด้วย) หมาป่า (มาแล้ว) ช่วยด้วย หมาป่ามาแล้ว ฝ่ายพวกชาวบ้านก็ออกมาหาเขา (จะช่วยเหลือ) และบางคนก็อยู่ด้วยกับเขาเป็นเวลานาน สิ่งนี้ทำให้เด็ก (เลี้ยงแกะ) คนนั้นพอใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ดังนั้นอีกไม่กี่วันต่อมา เขาจึงเล่นตลกเหมือนเดิมอีก และก็อีกนั่นแหละ ที่ชาวบ้านได้ออกมาเพื่อจะช่วยเขา ครั้นหลังจากคราวนี้ไม่นาน หมาป่าตัวหนึ่งได้ออกมาจริงๆ จากป่า แล้วก็เริ่มรบกวนฝูงแกะ แน่นอน เด็กคนนั้นก็ร้องออกไปว่า "ช่วยด้วยหมาป่ามาแล้ว ช่วยด้วยหมาป่ามาแล้ว โดยร้องดังยิ่งกว่าคราวก่อนอีก แต่คราวนี้พวกชาวบ้าน ซึ่งถูกหลอกมาสองครั้ง ต่างก็คิดว่าเด็กคนนั้น กำลังหลอกลวงพวกตนอีก จึงไม่มีใครโผล่หัวออกมาช่วยเขาอีก ด้วยเหตุนี้หมาป่าจึงได้กินอาหารอร่อยปากจากฝูงแกะของเด็กคนนั้น

There was once a young Shepherd Boy who tended his sheep at the foot of a mountain near a dark forest. It was rather lonely for him all day so he thought upon a plan by which he could get a little company and some excitement. He rushed down towards the village calling out Wolf,Wolf. and the villagers came out to meet him, and some of them stopped with him for a consideration time. This pleased the boy so much that a few days afterwards he tried the same trick, and again the villagers came to his help. But shortly after this a wolf actually did came out from the forest and began to worry the sheep, and the boy of course cried out wolf, wolf" still louder than before. But the villagers, who had fooled twice before, thought the boy was again deceiving them, and nobody stirred to come to his help. So the wolf made a good meal off the boy's flock.
